Sharla Bynum
I am running as an unaffiliated candidate, focused on addressing the issues that matter most to South Salt Lake residents and business owners. For the past 12 years, I have been a positive changemaker—bringing people together, solving problems, and building a stronger community. My 28 years as an educator give me a unique perspective on how best to support our most vulnerable children and families.

Recent accomplishments include establishing and enforcing a Council Code of Conduct, ensuring meetings remain civil and focused on solutions rather than theatrics. I also supported capping and regulating short-term rentals, giving our city stronger tools to address nuisance properties. In addition, I have championed long-term infrastructure planning for water, sewer, and roads—placing the burden of growth on new developers whenever possible, rather than longtime residents.

I remain committed to strengthening neighborhoods, supporting local businesses, and ensuring South Salt Lake continues to thrive.
Proven Leadership
Experience matters. I take pride in being fair, collaborative, and committed to working with all stakeholders, as demonstrated by my six years of service as Council Chair. Effective leadership requires the courage to have difficult conversations and the humility to listen to experts. It would be an honor to continue representing and serving the South Salt Lake community.

The Issues At Hand
The Future of SSL

With the loss of Federal funding and grants, it is more important than ever to plan for the financial sustainability of legacy programs and events such as Promise South Salt Lake and Mural Fest. These initiatives have become an integral part of South Salt Lake’s identity, and we must develop a clear action plan that includes engaging additional philanthropic partners and donors to ensure their continuation for years to come.

Community Policing
Housing
Housing options for all ages and income levels are a growing concern across Salt Lake County, and South Salt Lake is no exception. Our community should be a place where people can rent, buy, and comfortably age in place. I am committed to advancing affordable housing alongside new development, while also working with community partners to rehabilitate vacant homes and create homeownership opportunities for first-time buyers.

It is critical that we continue building on the community policing model in South Salt Lake. When the Council created our Civilian Review Board, we made it clear that our priority is strengthening trust and accountability while protecting and serving our community. Current programs, such as our Homeless Resource Officers and School Resource Officers, demonstrate how this approach is working and provide a strong foundation to expand upon.
